1. What's the ratio of men to women?
Nationally the member ratio of men/women golfers in ASGA is about 50/50, but the ratio of men/women for Hartford ASGA varies from week to week. Not everyone plays golf in every event, and we never know who our guests will be, so it's difficult to determine what our overall ratio would be.
2. What do you do at your membership meetings?
Throughout the year, we host two different types of membership meetings: either a traditional dinner meeting with a program or a monthly mingle social gathering. For the traditional dinner meetings, we generally socialize for the first hour. Following dinner, we have a brief business meeting, then a golf-related program/guest speaker. At the monthly mingle social gatherings, the focus is on socializing and getting to know fellow golfers.
3. Do you provide golf lessons for the members?
Our chapter does not provide golf lessons. Many of our members can recommend a local golf professional who will give lessons. Also, it is not uncommon for our club to offer clinics at local driving ranges. Any member may contact a range, seek a qualified instructor and establish a group rate for our members. We welcome such initiative!
4. How much does it cost and what do I get for my dues?
Dues are set by the national organization, and are currently $70 for a year, renewable annually from the date you join. Our chapter charges $10 additional for any non-member playing in any golf outing, as we encourage all players to our association.
Your dues support the national organization, which has expenses like any other business, e.g. personnel, office rental, computer and copier leases, etc. Expenses at our local level is kept at a minimum and each event, whether it is a golf outing, social, Christmas party, etc. is borne by the participants of each event.
Please check the “Membership Benefits” on our website.
5. Is there anybody my age in the club?
Come to a monthly mingle or meeting and see for yourself. All clubs have a variety of ages. When younger people join, it causes other young people to join. It’s important to have a club with all ages involved. All are welcome!!
6. Where do you play?
Anywhere we like. We use a number of local courses, including municipal, private and semi-private clubs. Golf courses are selected based on input from our members. The national organization sponsors many multi-chapter weekend golf trips. Members are more than welcome to organize an event at a favorite course.
7. How often do you play golf?
Our club plays at least one weekend per month in an organized 18 hole outing, planned by our golf committee. Our Chapter has Friday Night Golf (FNG) every Friday, which is nine hole, casual play, with tee times beginning at 4:30. This has been most popular with our members. There is also Sunday Golf, another nine hole event, beginning at 3:00. If you want more golf, please get involved and help promote more outings.
8. How do I sign-up to play?
If you would like to sign up for one of our events, complete the form included with the e-mail announcing the event and forward it to the Treasurer. You will be placed on a temporary list until payment has been received.
9. I’m divorced. Am I allowed to join?
Absolutely! Single, by our definition, is anyone who has never been married, is legally separated, is divorced, or widowed.
10. Do you have to be a good golfer?
No. You just need to be a good person. Our average handicap is 25, nationally. So for every 15 handicapper, there is a 35 out there, and for every 5 handicapper, there is a 45. We encourage beginners to join, because learning through friends, is not as intimidating. We want members to become good golfers because it is a "game for life." Our golf outings often include a variety of formats so that we all can have fun. Some members are naturally good at helping newer golfers with how the game is played and what is proper golf etiquette.
11. What happens if I get married?
It will be “Congratulations and farewell!” We are a singles club. Not that we have anything against married people, in fact that may be a goal for a lot of our members. But we preserve our uniqueness by keeping it a singles club.
12. How can I become more involved in HASGA?
Volunteer for one of the committees: golf, social, membership or communication.
Organize a golf outing or tournament with help from the Golf Committee
Arrange a social gathering (dinner, concerts, kayaking, billiards, etc.)
